Ultimate Blanket Weed Killer
What it does?
Ultimate Blanket Weed Killer controls and prevents blanket weed and algae for an extended period, clarifies the water in ponds, leaving them healthy and beautiful. It dissolves away surface sludge and waste, breaks down dead algae and organic residues.
Ultimate Blanket Weed Killer is a "blanket" treatment for a clean pond. It treats far more pond volume than comparable products and thus is an extremely economical way of resolving blanket weed problems.
How does it work?
Ultimate Blanket Weed Killer works by removing key pollutants that get into the pond water from the public water supply, agricultural run off, decaying plants, leaves, fish feed or simply too many fish.
These pollutants cause all sorts of problems in the pond the results of which manifest themselves as blanket weed and algae particularly at warm and sunny times of the year. Ultimate Blanket Weed Killer uses a number of processes to clear the pond of blanket weed and to clarify and restore natural water to your pond:
- It contains natural minerals that immediately absorbs inorganic pollutants and convert them into a non-soluble mineral that sinks to the bottom. The next day you will see a white residue at the bottom of your pond which has absorbed and continues to absorb them.
- It contains a flocculant to collect organic matter in the water and collects it in the filter or the bottom of the pond if you haven't got filtration.
- Having removed one of the major food sources for the algae it then stimulates the demand in the algae for this food source. As it is now missing the algae literally starves itself to death.
- It contains a high surface base to encourage the active bacteria in your pond that target and digest waste material in the pond, then accumulates it in the filter.
Will it hurt my bio-filter?
No, in fact it will actually help your bio-filter by improving its performance.
Will it hurt my fish?
No, the active ingredients target minerals in the water column but will have NO affect on living organisms in the water. However, make sure that you mix the Ultimate Blanket Weed Killer with pond water prior to adding it to the pond so that all soluble ingredients are dissolved.
Will it affect my lilies and floating aquatic plants?
Not significantly. These plants typically absorb phosphate through their roots and not through the water column. You might see slower growth rates, but it will not harm them. Many professional aquatic plant growers use Ultimate Blanket Weed Killer to keep the water clear between plants.
How much do I need to use?
1 kilo will normally treat between 5,000 to 10,000 gallons depending on nutrient levels.
How often do I need to treat the pond?
Treat the pond once at the beginning of the season after the water temperature has risen above 10 deg C (50 deg F). If your bio-load is particularly heavy and you see algae starting to come back add a small maintenance quantity of 5 grams (1 teaspoon) per fortnight to keep the pond clear. If algae continue to appear after this then you are either overfeeding, your bio-filtration is inadequate for your pond and you should consult a reputable aquatic store for a larger filter or reduce the number of fish in the pond.
Can I use too much?
No. It will not harm your fish. It's better to overestimate than underestimate.
What is the white powder at the bottom of my pond?
In use, the pond will go very cloudy at first. The pond will then clear within 24 hours. For the first few days you may see some white powder at the bottom of your pond. This is the absorbent and mineralized phosphate that has been removed from the water. This will turn brown in a few days and not be noticeable.
Directions
If your pond has blanket weed or greenwater algae ensure that the water is adequately aerated both before and during treatment. This is because as blanket weed or algae dies off it can take all the oxygen from the pond water, particularly in hot weather. Remove as much blanket weed as you can from the pond. Apply at least 30 grams (roughly 1 heaped tablespoon) per 100 gallons by slurrying in a bucket and applying to as wide an area of the pond as possible. Continue to remove blanket weed during the first treatment. If growth persists after two to three weeks it is usually because nutrient levels were too high for the initial dose to be completely effective so use a further dose at 30 grams per 100 gallons and then revert to 5 grams per 100 gallons per fortnight to keep your pond crystal clear.
What if it doesn't work?
- Did you remove as much algae as possible from the pond both prior to treatment and during treatment?
- Did you wait for 14 days from the first application? The full application needs a few days to fully start working.
- What is the phosphate level in the pond? Test for phosphate following the treatment. If there is residual phosphate then the levels were higher than the product could compensate for in the first application. Re-treat with a further dose of Ultimate Blanket Weed Killer
- If the product still does not work it indicates a more serious problem in your pondkeeping.
The most likely causes are:
- you are overfeeding.
- your bio-filtration is inadequate for the size of your pond and/or the number of fish in it. Manufacturers specifications for filters often overstate the number of gallons treated for the number of fish people typically have in their ponds. Either increase your ponds filtration capacity or reduce the number of fish in the pond.
- Fertilizer run off or leaching of nutrients into the pond is occurring
- Top up water contains high levels of nutrients
- You have one of several species of pernicious string algae that adhere to rocks or concrete and have a root system that draws nutrition from these. To clear these then it is necessary to treat your pond with Ultimate Instant Pond Shade to cut out the light they need or use an algaecide.
